Flooring Ideas for Your Basement

A basement is unlike any other room in a house in that it is part of the underground fabric of the building. In essence, this means that there is the possibility that there is a level of moisture in it. Before deciding on the type of flooring you want, it is absolutely essential to determine just how much moisture there is in your basement. Too much moisture will ruin any flooring, so it is important to take this first step.

How to Measure Moisture Levels

Calcium chlorine kits and alkaline test kits will determine moisture combinations in your basement; both are as important as each other.

Use of the Basement

Next, decide on the purpose of your basement as this will have a bearing on the type of flooring you choose and also the type of shelving you install to. Now we can discuss the various options open to you.

Painted Concrete

Once the slab is sealed, a concrete-specific paint should be applied. You can either use a solid colour or one that creates a marble or granite effect. If you are feeling creative, then a geometric pattern can be created by taping off two colour squares. Be imaginative and what first appears as dull concrete can be brought to life. To prevent scratches and to ensure the colour lasts, always apply a finishing sealant.

Rubber Flooring

A rubber floor is perfect for a gym or exercise space. Cushioning and insulating, it is easy to lay and very cost-effective. It comes in either sheets or blocks, which are easy to fit.

Laminate Floating Flooring or Hardwood Flooring

For a laminate flooring effect, floating floors sit on an underlay that is cushioned; the interlocking design means they fit snugly together, without using nails or glue, and it’s quick and easy to install. The underlay also ensures that these floors are warm and comfortable to walk on.

Carpet

As long as your basement is dry, then carpet is a fantastic option. Now you know the purpose the room will fulfil, the choice should be easy to make. We’d suggest berber for a room which will see a high footfall or frieze for a gym. Don’t forget padding or underlay – fibre, sponge or foam rubber.

Tiles

If you are tiling, the floor needs to be prepared beforehand. Also remember underfloor heating, as tiles are cold.
