What to consider when self building your home

Over the years it has become more and more popular for people to look at ways in which they can build their own homes. This could be building them from materials such as brick or working with Timber Frame Manufacturers to create a home from wood. Regardless of what materials you want to use to create your self-built home, there are a number of things that you will need to consider when you set off on this journey.

Location – finding a piece of land that is supported for residential use is the first thing that you need to consider. This can be one of the hardest parts of the process. There can be restrictions on the use of land so it is important that you look for vacant land that already has a permit for residential dwellings to be built on it.

Planning – next you will need to get planning permission for the erection of your building on your chosen land. In some cases you can find land that already has planning permission granted for certain dwelling types. It is important that if you purchase this type of land that you assess whether you would need to put any amendments to the planning permission in place.

Surveys – having surveys completed on your land is important to ensure that any remedial work that you might need to have undertaken is put in place before you start building your dwelling.
